Infamously labelled ‘the diabetes capital of the world,’ India is not only burdened with a host of chronic diseases but now faces a number of emerging challenges. Infrastructural weaknesses and a lack of resources have seen these conditions drive many into severe financial difficulty. However, a dearth of data collection and weaknesses in awareness schemes hinder the creation of the robust health programmes necessary to tackle such conditions. To begin bridging this gap, experts in infectious disease, non-contagious disease, and chronic conditions will come together with public health professionals, policy makers and celebrity advocates to raise the profile of India’s disease burden.
