Prof. JS Thakur is fellow of the Indian Public Health Association and Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine. He has been the cluster head for Non Communicable Diseases and Mental Health in WHO Country Office for India for more than 3 years (2009-2012). Thakur is founder president of World NCD Federation, a professional association working for global NCD agenda, and also founder editor of International Journal of Noncommunicable Disease. He has been a consultant to many developing countries including Maldives, Sri Lanka and Timor Leste on non-communicable diseases and health promotion and has also played the role of technical advisor to the Govt; of Punjab and Haryana. He has edited and written a book on public health approaches to noncommunicable diseases, and health promotion manual for health workers. He is principal investigator of many important projects, notable among them are WHO supported Chandigarh Healthy Heart Action Programme (CHHAP), developed models for district NCD control programme, healthy workplaces and Health Promoting Schools (HPS), accreditation system for HPS and district Health Promotion model for strengthening the National Rural Health Mission.
