Dr Shaila Desouza has championed the cause of Women’s Studies for over 25 years and is responsible for the creation of the Department of Women’s Studies at Goa University that offers both MA as well as PhD programmes in Women’s Studies. Currently apart from her position as Head of the Department of Women’s Studies, she is the Vice-Chairperson of the State Monitoring Committee for Women and Child Development which is Chaired by the Minister of Women and Child Development, Goa. She has also been appointed as member of the Goa State Commission for Women and this is her second term in this office. Dr Desouza’s research publications have been in the broad areas of health, development, violence and justice. She has been involved in gender related outreach programmes for the past 30 years with communities in Goa and has also built collaborations at national and international levels.
