Dr. Soumitra Pathare (MD, MRCPsych, Ph.D.) is a consultant psychiatrist and director of the Centre for Mental Health Law and Policy at the Indian Law Society, Pune, India. His primary interests lie in mental health policy, assessing the scalability of mental health services, rights based care, and health legislation. He was appointed by the Government of India as a member of the Mental Health Policy Group and drafted India’s first National Mental Health Policy which was released in October 2014. He has provided technical assistance to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (Government of India) in the drafting of India’s new Mental Health Care Bill. He is currently the project lead of a Grand Challenges Canada (GCC) funded project which is working in collaboration with the government of Gujarat to improve the quality of public mental health services whilst removing the stigma often afforded to users.
