Sukhadeo Thorat is an economist who is currently Professor Emeritus at the Centre for the the Study of Regional Development, Jawaharlal Nehru University. Prof. Thorat has worked extensively on issues related to rural poverty and agricultural growth, economic institutions, problems of excluded groups, the economics of the caste system, economic discrimination, and was the director of the Indian Institute of Dalit Studies between 2003 and 2006. He has been awarded Honorary D.Litt, D.Sc, D.S. (Doctor of Education) and LLD Degrees by twelve universities from India and one university from outside India and has published 20 books and around 100 research papers. In 2008, Prof. Thorat was awarded the Padma Shri; he also won India’s fourth-highest civilian award, the Mother Teresa International Award, and was recently honoured with the Babasaheb Ambedkar Ratna Award by the Delhi government for his contributions to the study of the thoughts of Dr. Ambedkar.
